On September 18,2010 I asked for an English translation for the video of Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale being interviewed at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.
Super Alain Delon fan and filmmaker, Nikolle, was kind enough to send me a link to her posting of the video AND an English translation.
Many thanks to you, Nikolle!
“Journalist: In Cannes, Alain Delon and Claudia C. will discover the restored version of “The leopard”, Visconti, Golden Palm 1963.
We are here with Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale. Claudia, you and AD have always stayed in touch. It’s a real friendship between you and AD?
CC: I adore Alain, we see each other often. It’s extraordinary that we have known each other for such a long time.
J.: Alain, we have seen the image where CC with her hand and her cheek on your shoulder. Is it emotional for you meeting her today?
AD: Yes, a lot of emotions, because I haven’t seen the film for a long time, and in particular the restored version. Also, because I’ll go up the stairs with Claudia, and especially because both of us, we’ll be giving tribute to those our friends who are no longer with us, Lombardo, Bert Lancaster, Reggiani, etc. They taught us many things, and now, 47 years later, we’ll be here in their honour.
J.: what was the atmosphere 47 years ago, during the shooting with Visconti? Was he strict and demanding?
AD: Yes, exactly so, very strict and demanding. Actually, it was 48 years ago, because we were shooting in 1962.
CC: He was an outstanding master. And he loved us.
J.: We’ll continue after some images… Alain Delon, you don’t like watching your films, do you?
AD: I’d like to mention the music by Nino Rota. No, I don’t like watching those movies, because every film is a part of my life. And “Leopard” is exceptional, it happened half a century ago, many people are gone. It’s hard to watch those scenes again, the images of people I loved. It’s unbearable. It’s not only “Leopard”, it’s “Swimming Pool” with Romy. I just can’t watch those images.
J: For you Claudia, what dominates: nostalgia or the idea that “time passes” “it’s life”?
CC: of course, the time passes, it’s life. Those extra diary encounters are in our memory. As Alain said it’s sad to realize that those people are gone. It’s part of our live.
AD Claudia and me, we had met before Leopard. We met in “Rocco and his brothers”, with Annie Girardo, Renato Salvatory. It’s another great film. “The Leopard” was our second encounter.
CC: that’s right!
J: we wish you anyway a pleasant evening in Cannes
AD, CC: Thank you very much.”
