Earlier this week I posted about Alain Delon spending an hour being interviewed by Frédéric Taddéï. We were sad that the video had been removed from the show’s site. https://samourai.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/alain-delon-tonight-or-never/
Wonderful people leaving helpful comments gives us a way to see that interview. ADFan shared a link that has Alain Delon’s interview with Frédéric Taddéï. It is in five short films. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xg1wq3_alain-delon-ce-soir-ou-jamais-1-5_shortfilms
Nikolle sent a translation from her friend Olga. The show is too long to translate every word. Olga gives us a flavor of the discussion.
….”I owe it to my childhood”, – he said. His foster parents lived very close to a prison, and as a child, Delon went to play right in the prison’s courtyard…OMG!
He spoke about his service in the army in Indochina. He said, he had not participated in combats (and he was not a paratrooper). Most of the time, he served as a guard at the Saigon arsenal. There was much fear at the war. He remembered an episode: they were 40 in a group, with their machine guns, sitting still, waiting for an action. Suddenly, one of them started clattering his teeth. In a moment, all 40 were clattering teeth…everybody was so scared..
When he was a child, he played piano. At the graduation exam he played the overture from “Barber from Seville”! Once, when he was 12, his mother told him to play in front of the guests. Delon was shy, and refused. Then, the mother shut the piano lid, and hit him on the hands. Since then Delon has never played piano.
AD remembered Yves Allegret, his first film director. Allegret said: don’t try to play! Just be yourself, talk like you do, move like you do. Since then, Delon said, I’ve always done like that.
The host said: many actors never cry in the films. Belmondo never cried, but Gabin and Brando did, and you did.
Then, they played that famous episode from “Rocco” with Alain Delon and Annie Girardot on the roof of the Duomo: a huge tear comes out of his eye…So touching!
After that episode AD gave tribute to Annie Girardot. Poor woman, she is completely out of her mind, does not remember anything..
The host mentioned that in many roles Delon was very violent. He played the episode from “Sicilian Clan” when Delon hits the fish against the rocks and after he makes love to Jeanne. Delon made the comment: Yes, I have kissed women like that, but I have never killed an animal like that in my life. I’d be able to hit a human, but not an animal.
The host played an episode from “Melodie en sous –sol” in which Delon is arguing with his mother, he is very rude. The host said: that’s how I think you behaved when you returned from the army. Delon said: well, it’s only a character…
The host said: Did it ever occur to you that you were the only Zorro without a moustache? Delon said : Really? I had moustache in other movies, Gitan, Cercle rouge, nothing wrong about moustache..
The host played an episode from “L’homme pressé”. He said : you collect artwork, have you ever sold everything to buy a piece? Delon said that once he had to bargain at an auction for Durer’s drawings from a private collection.
AD said that he never had regrets about any of his films, even those which failed..
Many, many thanks to ADFan, Nicolle and Olga! Please leave a comment if you have anything to add to the translation. I hope you enjoy your hour with Alain Delon.
