Alain Delon : “Jouer au théâtre avec sa fille, c’est l’apothéose !” – radio interview with Alain Delon about the play “Une journee ordinaire” in which he stars with his daughter Anouchka Delon.
Update- Many thanks to Olga for her translation!
Yves: AD, welcome to RTL. You return to the stage, but this time it’s a family business. You will play with a young actress with your name and initials, Anouchka Delon, and it begins next week at the theatre Les bouffes Parisiennes. The play’s title is “An ordinary day”. The two “A”, what does it mean? Are you scared for both of you?
AD: I’m a bit concerned, because my daughter does not have the right to make a mistake. My carrier is over, but she just starts hers at the theatre. So, I’m a bit scared. But now I’m more confident. One week before the performance I can say that she fascinates me.
It’s real happiness. For someone with my carrier, to be able to play with their daughter, it’s apotheosis. Very few people can understand what I feel, because few have experienced what I’m experiencing now, that it to play with their daughter or son. After all I’ve been through, arriving at this point means that once it’s done I can stop.
Y: is she able to give you advice?
AD: It’s not that she does not dare, even better. I had difficulty remembering a scene, and she said: dad, if you learn before going to bed, your memory will be better in the morning. (laughs). How do you like that!
Y: You were expelled from school 6 times. Is it true? Why?
AD: Because of stupid things that I had done.
Y: It’s not easy to tell your children to study…
AD: It’s not easy, but it’s part of my life. I’ve not written my biography yet, as everybody wants me to do, it’s part of my life which they do not know. Indeed, my children do not know who I am. They know all that stuff about computers and facebook and google. They are shocked to learn that at their age I was at the war. ..
Y: If your children ask questions, you’ll tell them?
AD: No, I’ve been waiting for the right moment, I think I’ll write the auto- biography, so that my children know about me. So far, they have known me as AD, they do not know what happened before I became AD.
Y: Have you been writing already?
AD: I have the plan in my head, I’ll do it especially for them.
Y: Do you have plans to work with Anthony?
AD: Yes, there is a project, to make a film together. I hope we’ll do it while I’m still there.
Y: Do you remember Gabin when you play in comedies?
AD: I remember Gabin, Signoret and others every day. I had learnt so many things from them, they had given me a lot, and loved me. Me too, I highly appreciated them. I think about them very often. In fact, I’m the man of the past. I think about the people who are no longer with us, and who had given so much. I owe them a lot. Maybe, I did not always have time to say thank you for everything they had gaven me.
Y: Young people know you thanks to the commercial “L’Eau sauvage” You may know that thanks to your photo and extracts from film by Jaques Dauray, L’eau sauvage became the most popular men’s perfume in France.
AD: Yes I know, and have thought about it. It’s extraordinary . Normally, this kind of publicity comes only after the end. But me, I’m alive. I’m a rare living myth of 21st century.
Y: You perfectly understand that you just said an outrageous thing, but it is true!
AD: Yes, it is true. Others like Steve McQueen, Elvis Presley, – they are gone, but I’m still alive. It’s unthinkable…
Y: Do you agree that you are megalomaniac?
AD: No, I just was very-very lucky. I’m absolutely sure.
Y: So, the play “An ordinary day” is also a story of your life? Your relations with Anouchka?
AD: I leave it to the public to decide, in fact, it is absolutely autobiographic it’s me 90%.
Y: You seem relaxed, calm. Often, people have the image of you fighting with windmills…
AD: I know! But it’s not my image.
Y: So, you are not a difficult person, then?
AD: Absolutely not! I’m a professional, I like talented people. At times I was rude with individuals whom I did not like, but people remember only that. The same in the cinema. I had worked with exceptional people. To others I used to say: move over please, I’ll do it myself. I never pushed Visconti or Clement.
Y: I believe you! I’ve learnt 3 important things today: you are going to finish the autobiography, your are a happy father on stage with the daughter, and there films with Anthony.
AD: And the number 4, a project with Alain Fabien, he is 17, and he also wants to play at the theatre with his father. He participated in Fabio Montale, and he wants to be an actor like his father and sister.
Y: Thank you
AD: You’re are welcome. And I thank RTL for the support and promotion of the play.
